La Alpujarra – Granada

When you’re studying Spanish in Granada, make sure you don’t miss out on visiting La Alpujarra or “Las Alpujarras” as the region is sometimes referred to. The region is located on the south slopes of the Sierra Nevada just below the snowy peaks of the mountains which you can see from Granada city centre.

From Granada it takes about 75 minutes by car to get to the traditional white villages. It’s an excellent area for walking as the villages are all connected by footpaths allowing you to take several different routes and enjoy the beautiful scenery while hiking.

It may seem like a journey back in time as the region has its unique culture and history from ancient times through to the present day which is represented in its food culture, traditions, handicraft and festivals. The friendly local people make you feel welcome and will help you find the best walks. There is a strong emphasis placed on the family, you will often see several generations of the same family sit down enjoying a meal together.

Try to finish off your visit to La Alpujarra with a visit to the oldest ham curing house in Trevélez. The curing house is a family run business that pioneered the building of a large-scale curing and drying house in the Alpujarra. It has been in operation since 1951 and is credited with being the oldest established commercial ham production facility in the Alpujarra, producing high quality cured hams for both national and international markets.

You can have a tour in the curing house and taste some of the best ham Spain has to offer.
