Meet Adam from Scotland. He moved to Barcelona for love and connection – his girlfriend is from Spain and he knew that learning Spanish was the way to connect with her family.
Having lived in Barcelona for five months, learning Spanish for Adam was about sharing family meals, joining conversations without feeling left out, and truly feeling at home in the city where he now lived. More than anything, he wanted the confidence to speak Spanish, not only in everyday situations, but also with the people who mattered most to him.
“I’ve been living in Barcelona for five months now. I wanted to learn Spanish because my girlfriend is from Spain and my in-laws don’t speak English, so I have to learn.”
His experience learning Spanish
When asked about his time learning Spanish at Linguaschools Barcelona, Adam highlighted not only the progress he had made, but also the school’s teaching approach and how he enjoyed meeting other international students and sharing the experience of learning a new language together.
“It’s been a great experience, and you get to meet people from all over the world! I also like that the lessons are flexible, and you can discuss a specific topic at your own pace, and move on when you’re ready.”

Learning through total immersion
One of the things Adam appreciated most was the school’s immersive approach.
At Linguaschools Barcelona, all lessons are conducted in Spanish from the very first class, even for A1 beginners. Our experienced native Spanish-speaking teachers, use communicative teaching techniques that help students build confidence and use Spanish actively from the beginning. This immersive, communicative teaching method encourages students to begin understanding, speaking, and thinking in Spanish from day one. While complete beginners may find the experience challenging at first, it helps build confidence and language skills quickly.
“The teachers are very good and really friendly; I really like the fact that the whole class is in Spanish. It was a bit difficult at first, but now it feels more natural and I believe there is no other way to learn Spanish.”
Just four weeks into the intensive Spanish course, he had already achieved one of the goals that had motivated him from the start: connecting with his girlfriend’s family in Spanish and building a deeper relationship with his in-laws.
“I had a 30-minute conversation completely in Spanish with my mother-in-law for the first time – and that’s really important to me. My goal is to be able to speak with them and with people here in Barcelona.”
Choosing Linguaschools Barcelona
Finding the right Spanish school in Barcelona wasn’t difficult. A recommendation from a friend gave Adam the confidence to enroll, and it didn’t take long for him to feel like part of the Linguaschools community himself.
“I chose Linguaschools because I have a friend who studied here and she was very happy with the course.”
From his first weeks at the school, Adam quickly got to know his classmates and all the staff, and never missed a chance to practice his Spanish. Whether he was asking a question at reception, chatting with his teachers after class, or catching up with classmates during the breaks, he turned everyday interactions into opportunities to improve.

Discovering Barcelona beyond the classroom
For Adam, and all other students at Linguaschools, learning Spanish wasn’t limited to the classroom.
He regularly joined the weekly cultural activities organised by the school, using them as another opportunity to practise the language while experiencing local culture first-hand. It was a chance to understand the neighbourhoods, traditions, and culture that make Barcelona so special.
One of his favourite activities was our Sangría de Bienvenida every Monday. Whether it is a student’s very first day at the school or they simply can’t resist another glass of our homemade sangría, it’s the perfect way to start the week, meet new classmates, and relax after class in our beautiful school garden.
“I like that there are always events during the week; I love Mondays when we have sangria here in the garden. There are also city tours, which are a great way to learn, practise Spanish and get to know people.”
At Linguaschools, we believe that food is an essential part of Spanish immersion, so we offer activities like churros night, and a traditional paella lunch. As a vegetarian, Adam opted for the vegetable paella—a delicious reminder that one of Spain’s most famous dishes has something for everyone. Sharing food, conversations and laughter with classmates made the experience even more special.

These moments outside class often become some of the most valuable parts of learning Spanish, helping students build friendships and lifetime memories.
Coming back for a second course
Perhaps the biggest compliment Adam could give the school was deciding to come back.
“This is my second time here and I’m really enjoying it and learning a lot too. I like the people here – the students, the teachers and the staff.”
We always enjoy welcoming returning students back to Linguaschools. Watching them continue their Spanish journey—and seeing how much more confident, connected, and at home they feel when they come back—is very rewarding.
