Fiesta de la Cruz in Granada: A Local Tradition Worth Celebrating

Our activities in Granada are not just an extra after class. They are part of the immersion experience: a way to discover the city, practise Spanish naturally, and get closer to local culture beyond the typical tourist highlights.

Every year in April, the city transforms, and we love that our students at Linguaschools Granada get to be part of it. It’s a chance to enjoy one of the most traditional festivals in the city, learn more about local culture, and practice their Spanish in the best possible way.

During this celebration, the streets fill with color, music, and flower-decorated crosses that adorn plazas, patios, and corners all over the city. The Fiesta de la Cruz is one of Granada’s most beloved traditions, a festivity that blends religious and pagan elements, bringing together locals and visitors every year to celebrate the Andalusian spirit together.

During these days, it’s impossible not to get swept up in the atmosphere. Women dressed in flamenco attire fill the squares, music plays on every corner, and the crosses compete to be the most beautiful and original. Each one is decorated with flowers, fabrics, and traditional objects, with neighbors, businesses, and local associations all joining in with their own creation. It’s one of those celebrations you have to see to understand why Granada is such a special city.

But wait, we celebrated at school too! 😍

This year, we joined the tradition. Our students and teachers worked together to create our very own cross, decorating it with all the traditional elements. Each student added a flower, learned the meaning behind every detail, and became part of something genuinely local. It wasn’t just an activity, it was a chance to practice Spanish in a real context, connect more deeply with the culture, and share a few hours of celebration with classmates from all over the world.

Because learning Spanish goes beyond the classroom. Taking part in festivities like the Fiesta de la Cruz is one of the best ways to connect with the culture, improve your understanding of the language, and, most importantly, create memories that last much longer than any class.

Will you join us for the next group activity? 🤩
