Do I need a student visa or NIE?
EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens do not need a visa but must register for a foreigner identification number (NIE).
Students from outside the EU must apply for a Spanish student visa through a Spanish embassy or consulate. Many students begin with a full-time Spanish course or University Pathway program and later extend their visa when starting university studies.
How much does it cost to study in Spain?
Spain is generally more affordable than many European countries, although Madrid and Barcelona are slightly more expensive than smaller cities, such as Granada, Valencia and Salamanca. Living costs vary depending on lifestyle and accommodation choices.
Public universities
Tuition fees for bachelor’s degrees usually range between €450 and €2,000 per year. Master’s and doctoral programs are priced per credit, typically costing €900–€3,000 annually. EU students pay the same rates as Spanish nationals, while non-EU students often pay higher fees.
Have in mind that students from inside the EU will pay the same tuition fees as Spanish students, but the ones from outside the EU -and those who are repeating a subject- will have to pay more.
Private universities
Private institutions determine their own tuition fees, which generally range from €5,000 to €18,000 per year depending on the program.
