At our Granada school, we’re always trying to introduce the students to the city’s history and traditions. That’s the reason why we tought it may be a great plan to take them to one of Granada’s most important celebrations: The Feast of our Lady of Sorrows.
The origins of this Saint trace back to early Christianity and live on through a 16th-century Mannerist sculpture attributed to Gaspar Becerra, which portrays the Virgin holding Christ after the Crucifixion.
In the 18th century, the bishops of Granada promoted her devotion with the construction of a chapel in 1704 and the founding of a religious brotherhood. This fervor reached its peak in 1887, when Pope Leo XIII proclaimed her Patron Saint of Granada.
Since then, each September 15, her feast day draws thousands of faithful, establishing it as a central event in the city’s cultural and spiritual life, so we thoght it would be a great idea to assist the celebration with our students.
Together, we took part in the procession, joining people from across the province. We brought flowers to the Virgin, following local tradition, and enjoyed the traditional dances and sweets that filled the city during this special day.
The students were absolutely amazed with the crowds and spent a really fun and emotional day geting to know more about Our Lady of Sorrows, the Saint Patron of the city!
