Linguaschools Barcelona review: Nayana from Brazil

Nayana (30) is from Recife, in the northeast of Brazil. She says she is a retired soccer player ???? She loves to watch games and go to the stadium. Besides soccer, she likes to go out with friends for a drink, cook, go to museums, visit the beach, play sports, have a coffee with cookies at snack time and enjoy a very calm breakfast in the morning. She also loves everything that is on the streets, that has to do with culture, customs, behaviour in general, whether current or old.

Nayana attended the intensive 20 course at Linguaschools Barcelona in the beginner level in A1 last year and stayed with us for 6 months. She still lives in Barcelona and is doing a master in Typography at the University. She explained us how she experienced her time at the school and how she fell in love with the city.

Why did you decide to learn Spanish?

Because I wanted to do a master here in Barcelona. In addition to my studies, I was already interested in the culture of Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries. I thought it was going to be a good opportunity to communicate and understand my interests in culture better.

Why did you decide to come to Barcelona?

I already had a passion for the city before I even went. I think I have had indirect influences from friends who visited Barcelona and told me about it. Surely, the climate, the Mediterranean food and the football culture made me choose this city. I wanted to go to a Spanish speaking country and when I started searching for the master, I found a cool option in Barcelona. So, all these things made me decide to come here. And they have brought me to the city with which I am in love today!

How is your Spanish level improving?

Unfortunately my time at school have already finished, I started from knowing a couple of words to be able to have full conversations! Today I try to always be connected to the language in some way. I love learning Spanish and I think there are many things that are helping me. I have a book on my nightstand which I read in every morning. My master in Typography that I have started here in BCN is in Spanish, there is a lot of literature that is also in Spanish. I also like to watch series and movies, listen to podcasts of expressions in Spanish and I think what has helped me a lot is sharing a flat with Spaniards. From the moment I arrived I live with people from here, so I am in contact with the language as many hours as possible.

How did you experience your time at Linguaschools?

For me it has been super valid and it were 6 months of good profit. I met many nice people from all over the world, we shared many stories. I had the opportunity to get to know BCN and the region through weekly excursions. I think it made all the difference to study at a school where I felt comfortable and that I felt that everyone wanted to help me.

What did you do at Linguaschools besides the lessons?

First of all I can say that I made a lot of friends. Classmates, teachers and staff) We exchange messages and good memories. In addition to friends, I got to know the bunkers (the best view of the city), I drank the best sangria in Barcelona every Monday, I enjoyed the La Castañada party at school, I visited a traditional medieval market (in Vic), I participated in a local experience during the Fiestas de Grácia with the residents of the neighbourhood and a lot of other things. This made me learn more about Spanish (and Catalan) culture and practice the language outside the school environment. I miss everything!

Which are your favourite spots to visit in Barcelona?

There are many! Hahaha! Of the old part of the city, the Barrios del Born and Gothic are the most interesting and wonderful in my opinion. The historical, cultural load and all the details in the architecture of the buildings, squares, churches, old shops … I love them! Even at night, to party or have a drink … I really like the Born and Gothic. It’s like I’m in a movie!

The Plaza Real and the church of Santa Maria Del Pi, are incredible sites in the surroundings of these neighborhoods.

In addition to the old part, I like to experience a bit the “more normal” neighborhoods, without so many tourist attractions. Explore markets, going to small events (street markets) that are organised in the more unknown neighbourhoods. Major Festivals also help you to learn a lot about the city, the people and the towns that are close to the city. I still have many things to explore, but so far my favourite spots are Hospital Sant Pau, Encants market and go to Tibidabo to see the sunset
