Eloísa Cartonera workshop in Buenos Aires

Eloísa Cartonera is a Latin American literature publisher that manufactures books with paperboard and photocopies. It was founded by Washington Cucurto in 2003, after the Argentine crisis at the end of 2001.

This organization has had great international recognition. In 2012, it received the Prince Claus Awards Main Prize of 100,000€ for its social orientation, while in 2014 it obtained the Diploma of Merit of the Konex Awards for his editorial work.

Since its foundation, Eloísa Cartonera has published around 200 titles. In addition, the publishing house was a precursor in manufacturing books with paperboard and photocopies (they’re called publishers “cartoneros”). Its idea was replicated in Latin America, the United States, and Europe and today there are more than 200 publishers cartoneros worldwide!
