How Chile won their first Copa América title in history

Chile won the first time the Copa América in history after a thrilling penalty shootout against Argentina.

During the period of one year Argentina loses the second crucial and final match in a major football tournament after their defeat in the World-Cup Final in Brasil 2014 against Germany.

The final of the Copa América on Saturday, the 4th of July, seemed like a déjà-vu for Messi and the “azul y blancos”. In fact, Angel Di Maria injured himself and had to leave the pitch earlier, the go-ahead goal was again at the foot of Gonzalo Higuain and the whole team of the Gauchos, which is the nickname of the Argentinian team, was again too much dependent on Messi.

It was a really close and intense match between the two Spanish spoken opponents. La Roja, how they call the team of Chile,  was defensively more secure than they had been in previous matches and caused frustration to the Argentina offense.  Chile made use of it and had their chances but couldn’t score. After goalless 90 minutes Chile kept calm and won the final with a Panenka penalty of Alexis Sánchez and a score of 4:1 in the end.

Chile had been dreaming of this moment for 99 years and finally it came true. The hard-fought victory lead to title celebrations in Chile that lasted the whole weekend.
