Best hiking and climbing spot in Catalonia

Montserrat is a multi-peaked mountain located near the city of Barcelona in Spain and is one of the best hiking and climbing spot in Catalonia. On sunny days you can see the city Barcelona and the sea from the top of the mountain.

The mountain is a sacred place, because it is well known as the site of the Benedictine abbey, Santa Maria de Montserrat, which hosts the Virgin of Montserrat sanctuary and which is identified by some with the location of the Holy Grail in Arthurian myth.

It is part of the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range and the main peaks are Sant Jeroni (1.236 m), Montgós (1.120 m) and Miranda de les Agulles (903 m). They are accessible by hiking trails which connect from the top entrance to the Sant Joan funicular, the monastery, or the base of the mountain.

The Cavall Bernat 1,111 meters (3,645 feet) is an important rock feature popular with climbers.

On a sunny Saturday morning we took the train from Plaza España to Montserrat. Up on top we decided to do a “little” hike of 2 hours….it turned out to be 2 hours one way!! and 2 hours back. It was a serious hike but when we got to the top and saw the great panoramic view it was definitely worth it!!
